About Professor Hisham Mehanna

Prof Hisham Mehanna is a world-renowned ear, nose, throat and head and neck surgeon, with an international reputation in the management and research of head and neck and thyroid cancer. Prof Mehanna is the Chair of Head and Neck Surgery, and the Director of the Institute of Head and Neck Studies and Education (InHANSE) at the University of Birmingham, UK.


Hisham specialises in thyroid, parathyroid and head and neck surgery, with an interest in complex and recurrent cases. He also treats voice and swallowing problems, tonsillitis, and nasal allergy, polyps and sinusitis.


Hisham also runs a large clinical research group, with more than £17m in grants, and has published practice-changing research in the world's top medical journals.


Prof Mehanna has been awarded many accolades, eponymous (named) lectures, visiting professorships, and positions of esteem. He is the current President of the Head and Neck Cancer International Group, a collaboration of 20 national groups around the world. He has also served as the President of the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists, the UK's multidisciplinary professional body for head and neck clinicians, between 2017 and 2019, and as the Chair of the National Cancer Research Institute's head and neck group between 2011 and 2017.
